Barcodes for products sold in shops

The EAN and UPC numbers that shops and marketplaces accept come from GS1. You license a company prefix from the GS1 organization in your country, then number your products under it. This tool adds and checks the last digit for you.

ITF-14 for cartons

Cases and cartons carry a 14-digit number in an ITF barcode: one leading digit (1–8), the first 12 digits of the product’s EAN-13, and a new check digit. Choose ITF-14 and type the first 13 digits – the last one is added.

GS1 requires a frame (bearer bar) around the ITF symbol, so this tool always draws one.

Your numbers stay on your device

The barcode is drawn right on this page, so internal IDs and numbers for unreleased products never leave your device.

FAQ

Who is this for?

Small shops and makers who need EAN or UPC barcodes on their products, offices and warehouses that label equipment, stock or files with their own IDs, wholesalers who mark cartons with ITF-14, and designers who need a crisp barcode in their artwork (SVG).

Does it cost anything?

No. Every type, any number of codes and every format (PNG, SVG, JPG) are free, with no watermark and no sign-up.

Are my numbers sent anywhere?

No. The barcode is drawn right on this page, so you can use it for internal IDs you don’t want to leave your company.

Can I make up my own product number for a shop?

No. EAN and UPC numbers for products sold in shops come from GS1 – you get a company prefix from the GS1 organization in your country. This tool doesn’t issue numbers. For numbers used only inside your company, Code 128 is a good choice.

What about the check digit?

For EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A and ITF-14, type the number without the last digit and it is calculated for you. If you type the full number, the last digit is checked and, if it’s wrong, you’re told what it should be.

Which type should I choose?

Shop products: EAN-13. EAN-8 numbers for small packs are a separate kind of number you get from GS1. UPC-A is the 12-digit form used in the US and Canada. Cartons: ITF-14. Internal IDs with letters or symbols: Code 128, which stays short. Code 39 only uses capital letters, digits and a few symbols, for older systems.
