FAQ

Who is this for?

Anyone sending letters, cards or parcels abroad: writing to friends and family, shipping orders to overseas customers, sending documents to companies or schools in another country, or dealing with a foreign address for the first time.

When is it most useful?

When you have the address but are not sure in what order to write it. Countries differ on whether the postcode goes before or after the city and whether a state is needed. Pick the country, fill in the fields, and the address is arranged in that country's order.

What are the benefits?

You do not need to look up each country's rules: you see the right order and the fields that country requires. If the postcode does not match that country's format, a notice appears so you can catch a typo. The country name goes on the last line in capital letters.

Is the address sent anywhere?

No. The page loads data on how each country orders its addresses and does the arranging on this page. Names and addresses never leave it.

How should an airmail envelope be laid out?

Japan Post's guide puts From and the sender's name and address at the top left, the stamp at the top right, and To and the recipient's name and address from the middle towards the bottom right. VIA AIR MAIL goes at the bottom left, in black or blue. Swapping the sender and recipient, or writing them side by side vertically, can lead to the item being returned or delayed.

What language should the address be in?

Japan Post asks that addresses be written in the Latin alphabet and Arabic numerals as a rule, so that mail is delivered reliably. This tool assumes Latin letters; if other scripts are typed, a notice appears.
