Age and high sounds

  • The Oto-Rhino-Laryngological Society of Japan says that age-related hearing loss generally starts with high frequencies
  • This page does not estimate age. An ear doctor's test measures hearing accurately

FAQ

What is a mosquito tone?

A very high-pitched sound (around 17 kHz) is often called that. High sounds become harder to hear with age, so young people may hear it while adults may not.

How does the mosquito sound test work?

Put on earphones and start with a low volume. Press Test and the tone rises from 8 kHz; press “Can't hear it” when it disappears. Then it falls from the top; press “I hear it” when you hear it. The average of the two is your result.

What frequency can people hear at each age?

This page does not show an age. We could not find a public standard that we could check for ages at these frequencies. What you can hear varies a lot between people and devices, so compare with family and friends on the same device.

Can I test with my phone speaker?

Speakers often cannot play high tones (roughly above 15 kHz), and then you get "can't hear" because of the device, not your ears. Use earphones or headphones. Even then, some devices and earphones cannot play the highest tones.

How loud should it be?

Start low. A high tone is still playing even when you can't hear it, so don't keep turning the volume up.

Why measure twice?

Going up, you press a little after the tone disappears, so the result tends to be high. Going down, you press a little after it appears, so it tends to be low. Averaging the two cancels out these delays, so the result is steadier than one pass.
