FAQ
Who is this for?
Remote workers who want to check their mic before a Zoom or Teams meeting. Anyone about to join an online interview or class who isn't sure their voice will come through. People who just bought a headset or a USB microphone and want to see it works. Gamers and streamers who want to make sure their sound isn't distorting.
When is it handy?
When someone in a meeting says they can't hear you, and you want to know whether it's the mic or the app. When you have more than one microphone and want to know which one is in use. When you want to record 5 seconds and hear how you sound. No app to install and no meeting to join.
Is my voice recorded or uploaded?
No. The sound is read inside this page. The 5-second recording stays in your browser and disappears when you close the page. It is saved to your device only if you press “Download”.
The meter doesn't move. What should I check?
Make sure the right microphone is selected, that it isn't muted, and that your browser and your computer allow microphone access. The page shows the steps for Windows and Mac.
I wasn't asked for permission, or I clicked Block
Click the lock or settings icon next to the address bar, allow the microphone for this site, then reload the page. If it still doesn't work, check that your computer lets your browser use the microphone (the Windows and Mac steps are further down this page).
It says no microphone was found
Check that the microphone or headset is plugged in and switched on. Closing other apps that may be using it, such as Zoom, Teams or Discord, and trying again can also help.
It says the sound is very quiet, or too loud and distorting
“Very quiet” means the loudest sound in the last 3 seconds stayed below -45 dB. “Too loud” means the waveform keeps hitting the top. If it's quiet, move closer or raise the input volume; if it distorts, lower the input volume or move back a little. The message keeps updating while you talk.
What do the dB numbers mean?
They show the loudness of the sound reaching the browser (0 is the loudest). The meter covers -60 dB to 0 dB. Use the numbers to compare microphones or positions, not as a sound level meter.
What is the 5-second recording for?
Playing it back lets you hear something close to what others hear on a call. The recording is made in a format your browser supports, such as webm or m4a, and you can save it with “Download”.
Can I test a headset or a USB microphone?
Yes. If you have more than one microphone, choose it from the list. The list appears after you allow the microphone.
What are the microphone name and settings shown?
The page shows the mic's name, sample rate, channel count, and whether echo cancellation, noise suppression and auto gain are on, as far as your browser reports them. The mic is opened with the browser's default settings, so if your browser cleans up the sound for calls, they show as on.
It works here but not in Zoom or Teams
If the meter moves here, the microphone itself works. Check that the same microphone is selected inside the app, and that your computer allows that app to use the microphone. For Zoom, you can also try Zoom's official test meeting (linked on this page).
Does it work on phones?
Yes, in most mobile browsers. Allow the microphone when asked.
