FAQ
Who is this typing test for?
It suits students learning to touch type, office workers who want to type faster and more accurately, job seekers who want to know their WPM before an application or interview, and anyone curious about how fast they type today.
When is it useful?
For example, a 60-second test at the start of each day to track your progress, a quick 15- or 30-second round in a spare moment, practicing with text you type a lot at work using “Your own text”, or switching to Sentences to practice capitals, numbers and punctuation.
What are the benefits?
Your WPM and accuracy show your progress in numbers. The keys you miss most tell you what to practice. Your best score for each time setting is kept, which gives you something to beat next time.
Is what I type sent anywhere, and are my results saved?
What you type is not sent anywhere. Your best score for each practice set and time setting stays in this browser only (scores from your own text are not kept). Only when you press “Share on X” does a post with your speed and accuracy open.
How is WPM calculated?
WPM is correct characters (including spaces) divided by 5, per minute. Five characters count as one “word”, the usual rule for typing tests. Raw WPM counts every keystroke, right or wrong.
How is accuracy calculated?
Correct keystrokes divided by all keystrokes. Letters you skip by pressing Space early in a word also count as mistakes.
What is a good typing speed?
Speeds vary a lot from person to person. Practice with all ten fingers and without looking at the keyboard, and the number goes up week by week. Accuracy matters as much as speed.
Does my keyboard layout matter?
No. The test checks the characters you type, not which keys you press, so QWERTY, AZERTY, Dvorak and other layouts all work.
What is the difference between English and Sentences?
English gives you a random mix of common lowercase words. Sentences gives you short everyday sentences with capitals, numbers and punctuation, which is closer to real writing.
Why can't I type anything?
If a Japanese or Chinese input method (IME) is on, your keys go to it instead. Switch to a plain English keyboard; a message appears when this happens.
What happens when I make a mistake?
Wrong letters turn red. You can fix them with Backspace or keep going. Press Space to move to the next word. Press Tab or Esc at any time to restart.
Which time should I choose?
Choose 15, 30, 60 or 120 seconds, or 5 minutes. 60 seconds is the usual typing test; 5 minutes also tests your stamina. The timer starts with your first key. With your own text, the test ends as soon as you finish it.
Can I practice with my own text?
Yes. Tap “Your own text” and paste anything in English (a speech, an email, a report). Curly quotes and long dashes are changed to plain ones so you can type them.
What do the speed graph and missed keys show?
The graph shows your speed in 5-second steps, so you can see where you slowed down. Missed keys lists up to five keys you got wrong most often.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Tap the box and the keyboard opens; type with your phone’s English keyboard. On a phone the speed is usually lower than on a computer keyboard.
