Keyboard Tester

Press the keys one by one. Each key you press turns green. A key that doesn't turn green may not be working.

Press keys on your keyboard (keep this page open).

Held Pressed Not yet Chatter

The Fn key and some media keys don't reach the browser, so they won't light up.

Key presses are only counted on this page. Nothing is sent anywhere.

How to use

  1. 1. Choose layout and sizePick what is closest to your keyboard: US, ISO or Japanese (JIS), and full size, tenkeyless or laptop. On a Mac, tick “Mac layout”.
  2. 2. Press every keyPress each key once, from one end to the other. A key turns dark while held and green once pressed. The number at the top right shows how many keys are left.
  3. 3. Check and copy the resultLook for keys that didn't turn green and keys with a red border (key chatter). Copy the result to use when asking about a repair or replacement, or when checking a used keyboard.

What to check when a key doesn't work

  • Plug into another USB port or another computer and see if it's the same
  • For a wireless keyboard, check the battery or charge, and try reconnecting
  • Look for dirt under the key (if the keycap comes off)
  • If only certain keys don't work or type twice, the keyboard is probably faulty

If you see key chatter

Some keyboards let you set a longer “debounce” time in their own software. If the keyboard is still under warranty, copy the result from this page to explain the problem to the maker or the shop.

FAQ

Who is this for?

Anyone whose keys don't work or seem to type twice. Anyone buying or selling a used keyboard or laptop. Anyone with a new keyboard who wants to check every key. Anyone who needs to tell a repair shop exactly which key is faulty.

Some keys don't light up

On most keyboards the Fn key is handled inside the keyboard, so it never reaches the browser. Windows uses PrintScreen (PrtSc) for screenshots, so only the key release reaches the page. Media keys such as volume and brightness may not reach it either. If any other key doesn't light up, the key may be faulty or there may be a connection problem.

What is key chatter?

A fault where one press is typed two or more times. This page records it when the same key is pressed again less than 60 milliseconds (0.06 s) after it was released. Under 15 ms is faster than a finger can realistically press, so a fault is very likely. 15–40 ms needs attention, and 40–60 ms can also happen with very fast tapping.

What does “most keys at once” tell me?

It shows how many keys you can press together and still have all of them register (rollover). If you press many keys at once in games, you can check it here. Note that some Ctrl or Shift combinations may trigger computer or browser shortcuts first.

What's the difference between US (ANSI) and ISO layouts?

ISO keyboards have an extra key between left Shift and Z, so left Shift is shorter, and a tall Enter key that spans two rows. US (ANSI) keyboards have a wide one-row Enter and a long left Shift. A Japanese (JIS) layout is also available. On this page, US is chosen first. You can switch at any time.

The labels don't match what's printed on my keyboard

This page checks keys by their position (physical location). If your browser supports it, the labels follow the layout set on your computer. Even if a label is different, the key works if the key in the same spot lights up.
