FAQ
Who is this for?
People living in Japan who need to write their address in English: when ordering from overseas online stores, writing the sender's address on international mail, filling in visa, study-abroad or job forms, or telling friends and colleagues abroad where they live.
When is it most useful?
When an online checkout asks for the address split into Address Line 1, City, State and ZIP. Each field has its own copy button, so you just paste them one by one. For envelopes and EMS labels, you can copy the mailing label layout as it is.
What are the benefits?
Just enter a postal code and the city and area names come out spelled the way Japan Post writes them, so you don't have to look them up or guess the spelling. Block numbers written with 丁目, 番 and 号 are turned into the hyphen form, 305号室 becomes 305, and 3階 becomes 3F.
Is my address sent anywhere?
No. To find the area for a postal code, the page loads the postal code data stored on this site and searches it inside the page. The block number, building name and room number never leave the page.
In what order is a Japan address written in English?
The opposite of Japanese: from the smallest unit to the largest. Japan Post's guide lists building and room, then block number and area, then city and prefecture, then postal code and country. The results here follow that order.
Which field goes where on a checkout form?
Address Line 1 is the block number and area, Address Line 2 is the building and room, City is the city or ward, State / Province / Region is the prefecture, ZIP is the postal code, and Country is Japan. If the form only has a state drop-down, choose or type the prefecture name (for example Tokyo).
Why is 丸の内 written Marunochi?
Japan Post's romanized data leaves out long vowels (ou, uu and so on). Marunouchi will also be delivered. If you prefer that spelling, edit the field before copying.
How are building names converted?
Katakana and hiragana are romanized in the Hepburn style. Common building words such as ビル, マンション, ハイツ and タワー become Bldg., Mansion, Heights and Tower. Building names written in kanji cannot be converted, so type them in the Latin alphabet instead. Names you type in the Latin alphabet are used as they are.
What if my postal code is not found?
Check that all 7 digits are correct. Postal codes assigned to a single company or large facility are not in this data, so they will not show up. In that case, enter the postal code for the area where the building is.
Why is the area name cut off?
In Japan Post's romanized data, some long area names are cut short. When that happens, a notice appears above the results. Please correct the spelling in the field.
Can I edit the results?
Yes. The separate fields (Address Line 1 and so on) can be edited, then copied. The one-line address and the mailing label are rebuilt from the inputs above.
Does it work on phones?
Yes. The postal code box opens the number keypad. On narrow screens, the results appear below the inputs.
How current is the data?
It uses the postal code data (romanized) published by Japan Post. According to Japan Post, this data is updated about once a year, so very new area names or recently changed postal codes may not appear.
What can't it do?
It does not romanize people's names. It cannot translate building names written in kanji. It only works for addresses in Japan; it cannot turn foreign addresses into Japanese.
