Common uses
| Situation | How |
|---|---|
| Hours worked in a day | “Hours between times” with clock-in, clock-out and break minutes |
| Weekly total for a timesheet | “Add & subtract” with one day per line |
| When will a task finish? | “Time after” with the start time and duration |
| Turn 7:45 into payroll hours | “Convert units”: 7:45 → 7.75 hours |
Why a regular calculator gets time wrong
Time rolls over at 60, so typing 1.30 + 2.45 into a normal calculator gives 3.75 — but the right answer is 4 hours 15 minutes. This page converts everything to seconds first, so carries are always correct.
Another common mistake is writing 1 h 30 min as 1.3 hours. For pay, convert to decimal hours (1.5) before multiplying.
FAQ
Who is this time calculator for?
Hourly workers who want to check their hours and estimate their pay, managers and admins totaling shifts and timesheets, freelancers billing by the hour, and anyone who wants to know what time a task or trip will end.
When is it useful?
For example, working out a day’s hours from clock-in, clock-out and break, adding up a week of shifts one line at a time, turning 7:45 on a timesheet into 7.75 hours for payroll, or finding when an 8 h 30 min job that starts at 9:00 will finish.
What are the benefits of using it?
Time rolls over at 60, which is easy to get wrong on a regular calculator. This page converts everything to seconds first, so carries are always right. Results appear as h:mm, decimal hours and minutes at once, ready for timesheets and payroll.
What about overnight shifts?
If the end time is earlier than the start, it is treated as ending the next day. 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM is 8 hours.
What are decimal hours for?
Payroll and timesheets. 1 h 30 min is 1.5 hours, 1 h 20 min is 1.33 hours (rounded to 2 decimal places). Multiply by your hourly rate to estimate pay.
How do I subtract time?
In “Add & subtract”, put a minus sign before the duration, e.g. -0:45.
How do I enter a break?
In “Hours between times”, enter the break in minutes (60 for one hour). Hours worked are the time from start to end minus the break. If the break is longer than that time, you’ll see a warning.
What formats can I use for durations?
You can write “1:30”, “1:30:15”, “1h 30m”, “90m”, “1.5h” or “90 minutes”. A comma also works as the decimal point (1,5h). Minutes or seconds above 59, like “1:75”, can’t be read.
Can I use seconds?
Yes. Write “1:30:15” (1 h 30 min 15 s) or “45s”.
What if the total is over 24 hours?
It is shown as is, e.g. “26 h 30 min”, along with “1 day, 2 h 30 min”.
What if “Time after” goes past midnight?
The time is shown with “(next day)” or “(2 days later)”. When you go back with “before” and cross midnight, it shows “(previous day)”.
Can it calculate a shift longer than 24 hours?
“Hours between times” works within 24 hours, so the same start and end time counts as 0 hours. For longer stretches, add up each day’s hours in “Add & subtract”.
How does “Convert units” work?
Enter a duration and choose its unit (h:mm, decimal hours, minutes or seconds). For example, 1.5 in decimal hours becomes 1:30, 90 minutes and 5,400 seconds. With h:mm selected, a bare “1.5” can’t be read, so write “1:30” or “1.5h”.
What does “Some lines couldn't be read” mean?
The lines that couldn’t be read are listed. Rewrite them in a format like “1:30” or “90m”. No total is shown until every line can be read. Empty lines are skipped.
Are the times I enter sent anywhere?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. You can pick times with your phone’s time picker. On narrow screens, the results appear below the inputs.
