FAQ
Who is this tool for?
It suits anyone who wants to read a QR code in an email, PDF or web page on their computer without picking up a phone, anyone who needs to read a QR code shown on their own phone screen (use a screenshot), people who want to check where a QR code on a flyer or parking meter leads before opening it, and anyone who needs the password from a Wi-Fi QR code.
When is it most useful?
For example: reading a QR code in meeting slides directly on your computer, reading a QR code image you received on your phone when you can't point a camera at it, getting a Wi-Fi password onto your laptop, or reading several QR codes on one page at once.
What do I gain from using it?
You can calmly check what a QR code contains before opening anything. Links show the website name in bold, with warnings for risky ones. Wi-Fi and contact details are split into fields, so you can copy just what you need.
Are my images or camera feed uploaded?
No. Both images and the camera feed are read inside this page in your browser and are never sent to a server. The reader component is loaded from this site only.
Does it open links automatically?
No. Scanned links are only shown on the screen, and open in a new tab only when you tap “Open”. It never joins a Wi-Fi network by itself, and email and phone links open only when you tap them.
Can it read several QR codes in one picture?
Yes. Every code it finds is outlined and numbered on the picture, starting from the top left, and listed below.
Can I scan a QR code from a screenshot?
Yes. Take a screenshot, then press Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on a Mac) on this page or tap “Paste image”. You can also drop an image file on the box.
How do I scan a QR code on a computer or an iPhone?
On a computer, take a screenshot of the QR code (Windows: Win+Shift+S, Mac: Cmd+Ctrl+Shift+4 to copy it) and press Ctrl+V or Cmd+V here, or choose the image file. On an iPhone, tap “Choose image” and pick the photo or screenshot, or tap “Use camera”.
What if the camera doesn't start?
When you tap “Use camera”, your browser asks for permission to use the camera; choose Allow. If you blocked it before, allow the camera for this site in your browser settings. If the camera still isn't available, you can choose a photo or screenshot instead.
What can I do in camera mode?
The back camera starts first. “Switch camera” appears when you have more than one camera, and “Light” appears on devices with a flashlight. The camera stops when a code is read and the result is shown. Tick “Keep scanning” to leave the camera on and add each new code to the list.
What happens when I scan a Wi-Fi QR code?
The network name (SSID), password and security type are shown as separate fields you can copy, so you can paste the password into your laptop. The page never connects to the network by itself.
What kinds of content does it recognize?
Links, Wi-Fi, contacts, email, phone numbers, SMS, locations (latitude and longitude) and calendar events are recognized and split into fields. Anything else is shown as plain text. Open “Raw text” to see exactly what the code contains.
Why does it warn me about a link?
It warns when the link is not encrypted (http), uses a link shortener that hides the real address, uses look-alike letters (punycode), points to a bare IP address, or contains a user name or password. Fake QR codes on parking meters and posters are a common scam, so check the website name before opening.
Does it read barcodes on products?
On browsers with a built-in barcode reader (for example Chrome on Android and on a Mac), it also reads EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC, Code 128, Code 39 and ITF. Other browsers read QR codes only, and the page tells you so.
What if it can't read my QR code?
Crop the picture so the code fills most of it, take the photo in good light straight on without glare, or zoom in before taking a screenshot. When reading an image, the page already retries at different sizes, and it can read inverted (white-on-black) and slightly tilted codes.
Is the scan history saved?
Not by default. Only when you turn on “Keep a history in this browser” are the last 30 results kept, in this browser only. You can download them as CSV or delete them with “Clear”. Turning history off also deletes it.
Does it work on phones?
Yes. “Use camera” opens the back camera, and “Choose image” lets you pick a photo or screenshot. On narrow screens the scanner and the results are stacked in one column.
