Text Compare

Paste the original and the changed text. Differences are highlighted instantly.

Comparison happens in this page only.

Comparison happens in this page only. Your text is never sent anywhere. Share links keep the text after the # in the URL, which is not sent to the server.

How to use

  1. 1. Paste two textsOriginal on the left, changed on the right. You can also open text files.
  2. 2. See the differencesRemoved text is red (−), added text is green (+). Changes inside a line are shown in a darker color.
  3. 3. Adjust if neededIgnore whitespace or case, or compare character by character.

How to read the colors

Removed text has a red background and a “−”, added text has a green background and a “+”. When only part of a line changed, the line is lightly colored and the changed words are darker. The − and + marks also help if colors are hard to tell apart.

“Side by side” shows the original and the changed text next to each other; “One column” lists them in order. On phones, one column is shown first.

FAQ

Who is this tool for?

It suits people who need to check exactly what changed between two versions of a text: office and legal staff reviewing a revised contract or policy, editors and writers checking that every edit was applied, translators finding which sentences changed in a new source version, developers and web admins comparing config files or CSV exports, and anyone comparing confidential text (nothing is sent anywhere).

When is it most useful?

For example: when a revised contract comes back and you need to confirm every change, before publishing a blog post or press release, when comparing two versions of meeting notes or a specification, or when looking for differences between two CSV files exported from a spreadsheet. Single-character changes that are easy to miss by eye are highlighted.

What do I gain from using it?

Less time spent comparing and fewer missed changes. Only the changed parts are colored, so you can step through them with “Next” instead of rereading everything. You can save the colored result as a file to show a colleague or client exactly what changed.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. The comparison runs in your browser. A share link compresses the text into the part of the URL after the #, so nothing is stored on a server. Anyone with the link can read it, so do not share sensitive text.

Can I compare word by word?

Yes. Text is split into words with your browser’s word segmentation (Intl.Segmenter), so it also works for languages without spaces, like Japanese. Switch to “Character” to compare one character at a time.

What does “Ignore whitespace” do?

It ignores the number and presence of spaces when comparing, so “New York” and “NewYork” count as the same. A final line break on only one side is not shown as a difference either.
