FAQ

Who is this for?

Musicians tuning an instrument, anyone checking how low or high their speakers or headphones go, teachers and students demonstrating pitch, and anyone who needs an audio file of an exact frequency for a video or a test.

What frequency range can it play?

1 to 20,000 Hz. Very low and very high tones may not come out of some speakers or headphones, or may be hard to hear.

How loud should I play it?

Start low and choose a level where a tone around 1 kHz is comfortable. Turning your device up to hear very low or very high tones can harm your hearing or your speakers.

What is the difference between the waveforms?

A sine wave is a single pure pitch. Square, triangle and sawtooth waves also contain higher overtones (harmonics), so the same frequency sounds brighter or buzzier.

What happens with two tones at once?

Two close frequencies on the same side get louder and softer as many times per second as their difference (beats). Split them left and right to hear a different pitch in each ear.

How do note names relate to frequency?

With A4 as the reference pitch, each semitone is about 1.06 times higher (12-tone equal temperament). The usual reference is 440 Hz, and you can change it. When you type a frequency, the nearest note and its offset in cents are shown.
