What each count means
| Count | What it counts |
|---|---|
| Words | Runs of letters or numbers. “it’s” and “well-known” are one word each. |
| Characters | Every character, including spaces and line breaks. An emoji counts as one. |
| Characters (no spaces) | All characters except spaces, tabs and line breaks. |
| Sentences | Text ending with . ! or ?, or separated by a line break. |
| Paragraphs | Blocks of text separated by an empty line. |
Top keywords
Top keywords shows the five words you use most, with how many times each appears and its share of all words. Very common words such as “the”, “and” and “of” are left out so the topic words stand out.
If one word takes a large share, try a synonym in a few places to make your writing easier to read.
FAQ
Who is this word counter for?
It suits students checking an essay against a word limit, job seekers fitting a cover letter or application answer into a set length, writers and marketers trimming blog posts, social posts and ad copy, and anyone preparing a speech who wants to know how long it will take to read aloud.
When is it useful?
For example, before you hand in a 500-word essay, while you write an application answer with a character limit, when you need to know how long a talk will run, or when you want to see which words you repeat too often.
What are the benefits?
Every count updates as you type, so you can adjust the length while you write. Set a limit and a bar shows how many words or characters are left, or how far over you are. “Copy stats” copies all the numbers as text, ready to paste into a note or report.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Everything is counted in your browser. The Premium file option also reads the file inside this page and does not upload it.
Are spaces and line breaks counted as characters?
“Characters” counts everything, including spaces and line breaks. “Characters (no spaces)” leaves out spaces, tabs and line breaks.
Which spaces does “Characters (no spaces)” leave out?
All of them: regular spaces, tabs, line breaks and wide (full-width) spaces used in Japanese and Chinese text.
How are emoji counted?
Each emoji you see counts as one character, even emoji built from several parts, such as family or flag emoji.
Can I set a word or character limit?
Yes. Enter a number and choose “words” or “characters”. Characters here include spaces and line breaks. Once you go over, the bar and the message turn red and show how many you are over. Clear the box to hide it.
How are words counted?
A word is a run of letters or numbers. Words joined by an apostrophe or hyphen, like “it’s” or “well-known”, count as one word.
What does average word length mean?
It is the number of characters in all your words divided by the number of words, shown to one decimal place. Spaces and punctuation between words are not included.
How are sentences, paragraphs and lines counted?
A sentence ends with . ! or ?, or at a line break. A paragraph is a block of text separated by an empty line. Lines are counted by line breaks, and empty lines count too.
How does “Top keywords” work?
It shows the five words you use most, with how many times each appears and its share of all words. Very common words such as “the” and “and”, words shorter than three letters, and plain numbers are left out.
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time assumes 200 words per minute and speaking time assumes 130 words per minute. Real speeds vary from person to person, so use them as a rough guide.
Does it work for languages other than English?
Character counts work for any language. Words are counted by spaces and punctuation, so for languages written without spaces, such as Chinese or Japanese, a whole phrase can count as one word. Use the character count for those.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. On a narrow screen the text box comes first and the counts sit below it. The counts keep updating while you type.
Can I open a text file?
With Premium you can open a text file (.txt, .md, .csv, .html and similar) and count it. Files are read as UTF-8; if the text looks garbled, copy and paste it instead.
Why is my count different from another app?
Apps count in different ways, for example whether spaces and line breaks are included, how hyphenated words are split, or how emoji are counted. Check which rule your teacher or the form uses, and compare with the matching count here.
Can I count a Word or PDF file?
Not as a file. Copy the text from the document and paste it into the box to count it.
